One of best parts of doing this startup is traveling to exotics places and meeting with some interesting people. My business partner and I got back last month from a 2-week trip to Rwanda and Uganda.

Amahoro gorilla family siblings at play

While in Kigali, we took the opportunity to go Gorilla trekking in the Vocanoes National Park. Our friend Manzi Kayihura (of Thousand Hills Expeditions) managed to organize park permits at such short notice. The day started with an exhilarating trek through the cultivated foothills of the Virunga mountains. Then, abruptly, the trail entered the national park, immersing trekkers in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colorful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkey. But nothing prepares one for the impact of encountering a fully-grown silver back gorilla. They are so remarkably peaceful, playful and tolerant of human visitors. We spent an hour watching the gorillas as they go about their daily routine, feeding, playing and resting.

The following week we hopped on over to Uganda, which is about an hour flight from Kigala to Kampala. Kelly Munga (of Pearl of Africa Tours), a friend of ours recommended that we spend a couple of days at Murchison National Park, six hours drive from Kampala. The diversity of Murchsinon is quite unique - from rolling savannah and tall grasslands to thick bush and woodlands to marshes. We stayed at the Nile River lodge, which is a quaint lodge on the banks for the river Nile, with a great view overlooking the Nile. Besides the obvious game drives to the park, the Nile boat cruise is a must. Though I would recommend getting a private motor boat which is rather inexpensive.

As I travelled to far flung locations across the world, I often wanted an easy way to share my travels with friends and family while on the go. Traditional blog sites were too time consuming, and twitter lacked the tools to share my location or photos. So, we started on this concept of a simple web and mobile micro-blog where users could share quick travel footprint visually on a map by posting text, photos and videos – all in the context of where u at?. The Where u at? application senses your location automatically, so when you post to your blog, it not just a blah text post, instead what you share is a location-aware, multi-media post. Moreover, we wanted the user to manage who can and cannot follow you as opposed to a bunch of strangers following your footprints (sorry Aston!)
